Major U.S. technology companies are promising more transparency, local investments, and fewer confidentiality demands as resistance to data-center construction grows. Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are trying to win over communities worried about electricity use, water, tax breaks, and sudden development proposals. The Associated Press reports that Amazon and Meta recently each pledged one billion dollars in host-community incentives, while Google says its local investments could reach one billion dollars by the end of 2027. Critics remain skeptical, saying the companies still need to show who pays for the added power infrastructure and what nearby residents get in return.
Subtropical Storm Josephine moved north from the U.S. Northeast coast early Thursday, bringing a coastal-flooding threat and gale-force winds to parts of the Eastern Seaboard. The National Hurricane Center said the storm had sustained winds near 65 miles per hour and was expected to continue away from the United States, south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Still, the National Weather Service posted gale warnings for parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic through Friday morning, with hazardous conditions for small boats reaching south toward North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Minor to moderate coastal flooding could continue along the mid-Atlantic coast.
A lighter pick for the weekend: Wildwood, a stop-motion fantasy from Oregon studio Laika, opens in U.S. theaters Friday, October 23. The Associated Press lists the film as an adaptation of Colin Meloy’s book about a girl whose baby brother is kidnapped by crows and taken into a magical forest. Laika is known for handcrafted animation such as Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, and the new release gives families and animation fans another theater option as Halloween season approaches. The film is being released by Fathom Entertainment.
